The immune-boosting effects of medicinal mushrooms

Joerg Gruenwald (PhD) is a botanist for more than 30 years and has conducted research in the field of herbal medicine. He is the author of several books as i.e. the international bestseller "PDR Physicians Desk Reference for Herbal Medicines". Furthermore, he developed many products based on ginger, garlic and now medicinal mushrooms.
Interview with our Co founder Joerg Gruenwald (PhD.)
In times of the flu, influenza and viruses, a strong immune system is needed to stay productive and vital. There are many factors, which can have an impact on the strength of human immunity. Stress, many diseases and nutrient deficiencies may have a negative influence on our bodies' defence. Dr Joerg Gruenwald (PhD.) is specialised in the field of herbal medicine and natural supplements & Co-Founder of Mush-D. In this interview, we will talk about the role of vitamin D and beta-glucans in strengthening the immune system. Furthermore, we want to highlight the immune-boosting capabilities of medicinal mushrooms.
What was the motivation for you to found Mush-D?
I am a botanist and I already do research about medicinal plants for more than 30 years. Here medicinal mushrooms and their natural health benefits interest me the most. When we founded Mush-D we had the goal to make people healthier through the natural power of mushrooms. We use the most efficient mushrooms in our supplements & snacks, which offer a convenient possibility to improve vitality in a delicious way.
What makes Immune D Capsules different from others?
When we developed our Immune D Capsules we had one intention: o make a fully natural supplement, which is effective at the same time. Our focus lies on nutrients, which are difficult to derive from food.
The capsules contain a combination of 1-3, 1-6 beta-glucans from the Agaricus Blazei Murill mushrooms and natural vitamin D, which we get from white button mushrooms (Agaricus Bisporus). We make mushrooms, which usually do not contain a lot of vitamin D, build it on their own through a UV-B light treatment. This process is EFSA approved (CAS-Nr. 50-14-6) and allows us to produce a fully plant-based source of vitamin D.
Which role plays vitamin D in Mush-D products?
A lot of people do have a vitamin D deficiency because they spend too much time inside, which prevents that we build vitamin D in our skin through sun exposure. Even if we go outside we can get too little amounts of vitamin D if we cover the skin with clothes or wear sunscreen. The angle of the sun is another factor, which causes us to have lower vitamin D levels. Between October and March, we cannot build vitamin D outside because UV-B rays do not enter the atmosphere in Northern Europe and North America anymore (above the 37th parallel). This is why most of the people should supplement vitamin D at least during this period.
How do beta-glucans contribute to the function of your Immune D capsules?
Beta-glucans are polysaccharides that can be found in oats, yeast and mushrooms. At Mush-D we only use the valuable 1-3, 1-6 beta-glucans from the Agaricus Blazei Murill. Several clinical studies have proven the immune-boosting characteristics of these nutrients. It can boost immunity by up to 25%.
